New View Campaign In Press And Scholarship

The New View Campaign devoted itself to both scholarship and activism as we challenged the medicalization of sexuality and the intrusion of Big Pharma into sex research and professional activity. Many of the ACTIVISM pages on this website include FACTSHEETS we prepared for FDA hearings which should be considered part of our scholarship.

In 2002, we published our BOOK “A New View of Women’s Sexual Problems,” edited by Ellyn Kaschak and Leonore Tiefer. It can also be found as Vol. 24, Numbers 1 and 2 of the journal, Women and Therapy. It begins with the full New View Manifesto, followed by 10 US and international commentaries, and then 11 diverse chapters about the New View and contemporary issues in women’s sexuality.

In 2003, we self-published an 80 page NEW VIEW TEACHING MANUAL. Here is the FULL PDF (link to NVCteachingmanual.pdf). It contains 12 classroom and workshop activities, the New View Manifesto, and some press pieces from that time.

We wrote 2 MEDSCAPE continuing education pieces about the New View, one about women with sexual complaints, and one about men.

We also wrote many scholarly articles and our work was analyzed by many others. Here is an extensive BIBLIOGRAPHY of the dozens of major articles between 2000 and 2017 that presented, examined, or included the New View perspective.

In addition to the items in the bibliography, two books should be noted. “Sex, Lies, and Pharmaceuticals: How drug companies plan to profit from female sexual dysfunction,” by journalist Ray Moynihan and pharmaceutical policy researcher Barbara Mintzes (Greystone Books, 2010), tells the “Pink Viagra” story, including a great deal of information about and provided by the New View Campaign. New View member Thea Cacchioni’s University of Toronto Press 2015 book, “Big Pharma, Women, and the Labour of Love” also includes extensive perspectives on the New View.

Finally, an important part of our activism has been to engage with the press to add our voices and point of view to public debates. We have catalogued PRESS pieces from each year of our activity, from 2000-2017.
